Denver Pet Friendly Hotels for Happy Dogs

Posted: 06/28/11 8:00 AM | Filed Under: Blog | No Comments »

Pets play such an important role in our lives that leaving them behind during trips can be stressful both for pets and the families that love them. Whether for vacation or business, what better way to comfortably bring Fido along then by staying at pet friendly hotels? Denver, Colorado offers many pet friendly accommodations that will help you and your dog feel like your very own home away from home when travel calls.

Hotel TeatroThere are a few important considerations to make when selecting from the many Denver pet friendly hotels available. When reserving a room, be sure to ask whether the hotel has size limitations. Some hotels will not accept dogs larger than 50 pounds, and many will not allow more than two dogs per room. Some hotels will have cleaning fees or pet deposits, and a few do charge a nightly fee anywhere from $5 to $25 per night for pet stays. Non-refundable cleaning and sanitation fees apply in some facilities as well so make sure to ask when making reservations.

Hotel MonacoEven pet friendly hotels will require leashes or restraints when dogs are accompanying owners in public areas. Also be sure to check on any breed restrictions that may be in effect at hotels you may be considering. Denver passed a 2005 ban on pit bulls or any pit bull mixes, and those transporting pit bulls through Denver must have a permit.
Some of our favorite Denver hotels to share with pets include the Hotel Monaco Denver at 1717 Champa Street and Hotel Teatro at 1100 14th Street.  Both hotels have special pet packages that include in room bowls and beds as well as spa services and healthy pet treats for your four legged friends.

Pet nutrition and pampering go hand in hand with dogdration thirst quenching drink for dog health and well-being.  Easy to pack and convenient for travel, be sure to bring it along on all your trips to keep your dog hydrated and happy.

Exercise Outdoors with Your Dog

Posted: 06/17/11 8:40 PM | Filed Under: Blog | No Comments »

Exercise Outdoors with Your DogWe all know exercise is vital to our own good health and longevity, and outdoor exercise for our pets plays an important role in their good health as well. By committing to bringing dogs outdoors to exercise, owners will find that pets are more physically and mentally fit. With the increase of obesity and heart problems in dogs, exercise becomes even more important to avoid health issues and increase pet lifespans.

As an exercise, walking brings stimulation to both pet and owner. Dogs enjoy the sights and sounds of the outdoors and running into other dogs during walks also helps their socialization skills. Dogs that remain indoors all the time can develop fears and anxieties that result in aggressive behaviors.

Playing in the yard or at a dog park are excellent ways to expose pets to outdoor fun. Playing fetch, throwing a Frisbee or kicking a soccer ball in the fresh air and sunshine can be all your dog needs to fend off boredom from indoor activities. Having fun with toys outside can stimulate interaction between happy pets and owners, and time in the sun is great for human dispositions as well.

Swimming is great for dogs of all ages. Older dogs with joint problems or limited movement can benefit from senior dog supplements and swimming to help overcome pain and stiffness. Biking with your pet takes morning walks to a whole new level, and with special devices for bikes so the dog harness can be attached while riding, dogs can come along for the ride.

By channeling the active energy inherent in dogs into outdoor exercise, the human-dog relationship benefits and caring for dogs becomes enjoyable for everyone. Make sure to begin incorporating outdoor activities into your dog’s regimen to keep your dog healthy. Also always bring dogdration water in convenient bottles to make it easy to quench your dog’s thirst during play time or long walks.

Training Your Dog – The Six Basic Commands

Posted: 04/20/11 8:00 AM | Filed Under: Blog | No Comments »

People say that a good, well-trained, well-mannered dog should know and follow at least five of the basic commands.  These five commands include: sit, heel, stay, down and come. However, training your dog may not be as easy as you think it is because it requires patience and the exercise of your authority.

Here are six basic commands that Animal Planet covers.

First is sit.  To start, hold a piece of a treat above your dog’s head. As he follows the food above, his head will tilt back and his hind legs will fold under him and this will get him into the sitting position. As you do this, say “Sit.”, and when he does it successfully, give him the treat.

Second is the down command.  While your dog is in the previously “sit” position, hold another treat near its nose and move it downward. As your dog’s nose follows the treat, move your hand forward in front of his face. As he starts to lower himself, say, “Down.” Then move your hand farther down and forward until the dog is fully lying down.

Third is stay.  With your dog in the previously “sit” position say, “Stay”, and with your palm facing the dog to reinforce the “stay” command, move a small step away while maintaining eye contact. After a brief pause, reward the dog with praise and a food treat for remaining in position. Repeat this exercise until your dog masters this command.

Fourth is release, with your dog in the “stay” position, stand in front of him - then open your arms and say, “OK!” or any of your own choice for a release word. Then reward this behavior with a treat.

Fifth is come.  Your dog should know how to sit and stay. At a distance turn to face your dog, then call him and while motioning with your palm inward, say “Come.”, when your dog moves and reaches you, command the dog to sit, and then give him his food as a reward.

And last is heel, with your leashed dog in the “sit” position on your left side, your right hand should hold the treat. Say your dog’s name, followed by, “Heel.” then start to walk, left foot first, holding the treat just over the dog’s nose. You should keep the dog on a tight leash. Your dog’s shoulder should be in line with your left knee. If he does this, reward him with larger treats.

When your dog have successfully mastered all these commands, reward yourself for your perseverance and patience, and reward your dog also. As you train your dog don’t forget that their health should be maintained with joint supplement pet health, consider dogdration, the tasty dog beverage to prevent canine dehydration after your command exercises!

Things to Do with Your Dog This Spring!

Posted: 03/28/11 8:00 AM | Filed Under: Blog | No Comments »

Did you know that the first day of Spring was March 20th?

There will be plenty of warm days to come, with even more opportunities for quality time with both the outdoors and with your best friend!

Spending time outside with your dog in a park or even in your backyard is an important and fun part about owning a dog. It is necessary to exercise with your dog, to keep them healthy and happy.

Fetch is always a favorite to play with your dog especially since you can rest while your dog runs about!  Always remember that dogs react better to praise rather than scolding. This can be applied to when you play fetch. When your dog successfully brings the ball back to you, reward her with a simple “good dog”, or a scratch, or even a biscuit. By doing this, eventually your dog will learn to fetch without you coaxing her to do so.

During those particularly hot or strenuous days, be sure that your dog is well hydrated. On trips to the park or even visits to your yard, be sure that your dog has water or dogdration, the premium k9 quencher that will keep your dog healthy, happy, and hydrated!

Tips to Traveling With Your Pooch This Spring Break

Posted: 03/21/11 8:00 AM | Filed Under: Blog | No Comments »

Making the decision to travel with your dog can be overwhelming at first. With Spring Break just around the corner, your instinct may be to call the dog sitter, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be.
Traveling with your dog can be simpler than you think.

Due to the increase of people traveling with their pets, many airlines and hotels have become more pet-friendly by using hardwood floors instead of carpet and other small differences. Refer to the New York Daily News’ article, “How to sniff out bargains before you travel with your dog” for some helpful tips on how to save on your vacation.

If you’ve decided to bring your dog on Spring Break, or on your summer vacation, here are three important tips for traveling together.

  1. Go to your vet: Before going on a trip, it’s a good idea to make it to the vet to make sure everything is going well with your pet’s health. Get all of the petmeds, check-ups, vaccines or sedatives that you’ll need for your dog for the duration of your stay.
  2. ID your dog: Whether you choose to use a microchip or just a collar with your name, address and phone number; be sure that your dog has proper identification.
  3. Take frequent breaks: Not only is this good for bathroom breaks, but dogs need to stretch their legs just as much as you do. This is essential if you’re traveling in hot weather. Take frequent breaks to make sure that your dog is staying hydrated. To ensure this, take along some dogdration, which doubles as a dog beverage, and as tasty, healthy treats!

Rainy Days Don’t Mean No Play!

Posted: 03/15/11 8:00 AM | Filed Under: Blog | No Comments »

April showers bring May flowers, but for now, you and your dog may find yourselves stuck inside during those rainy Spring days! Here are some fun ideas for activities and games to keep your dog (and yourself) occupied and active!

  1. Embrace the rain! Don’t let a rainy day get you down.  Slap a rain jacket on you and your dog and head outside, for some wet, warm fun!
  2. Ride bikes with your dog! In the right attire, a rainy day shouldn’t stop you and your pets from enjoying the outdoors! With a helmet, and maybe some rain shoes for your dog, nothing can stop you.
  3. Teach your dog a trick. A rainy day might give you the time and patience to teach your dog a new trick.  If you’d rather just spend the day playing with your dog while also helping them develop, try a game of hide-and-go-seek.  To play this game, hide treats in the house or yard and let your dog find them.
  4. Bake dog treats. Sometimes, some good home cooking is in order.  On this rainy day, treat your dog to tasty peanut butter dog treats. For even more taste and more nutrients, add some of our yummy dog beverage, which not only tastes great, but also ensures that your dog steers clear from canine dehydration.

Use the Snowy, Cold Weather To Your Dog’s Advantage!

Posted: 02/23/11 8:00 AM | Filed Under: Blog | No Comments »

Just because it’s cold and snowy outside during this winter season does not mean that you and your dog should stay holed up inside! Take advantage of the fun and beautiful snow while you still can!

Dogs are known to really love running around in the white powder, however, according to vets around the world, dogs’ fur coats does not necessarily protect them from the cold. According to K9 Magazine, despite their fur coats, they are not immune to the cold weather and can easily develop hypothermia and frostbite.

Nonetheless, you and your pup can enjoy the white stuff, as long as you’re safe and stay warm!

Playing hide-and-seek with a toy or item of clothing can be a tracking challenge for your dog. In winter, a fun game is to place a glove (with a treat inside for extra enticement) just under the surface of the snow.

Frisbee and other forms of catch are also fun activities for you and your dog. Watch how fast your dog can run in the snow!

After you come in from playing, to warm up and rest, while you’re drinking your hot cocoa, feed your dog some dogdration, the tasty dog beverage that keeps away canine dehydration!

Avoid chaining your dog to an object to prevent him or her from wandering off your property.  Dog experts feel that when a dog is isolated for a long time, it may become afraid of people or new places. So, take your dog out for at least one or two walks around the neighborhood daily. This enables it to experience new people, new dogs and new places.
  2. Show your dog love and affection. Give your dog lots of love by touching gently his head, body or muscles. As the dog can understand man’s body language well, he can automatically perceive your love. This will make your dog feels comfortable to be at home.
  3. Spoil your dog with dog toys and treats for dogs, like the peanut butter dog treats that come with dogdration!

By creating a good bond between you and your dog, your dog will definitely love you and be loyal to you. Remember, a dog is an intelligent animal; he can read your heart and mind very well, so be sure to communicate with him or her as much as possible. At last, you will obtain endless happiness with your dog as a good companion just like one of your family members.

Tips on How To Keep Your Dog Warm This Winter Season

Posted: 01/30/11 8:00 AM | Filed Under: Blog | No Comments »

According to an article published in UK’s K9 Magazine, despite their fluffy coats of fur, dogs aren’t always protected from cold, snowy weather. Dogs are not immune to cold weather, and, if exposed, they may develop and suffer from hypothermia or frostbite.

Frostbite occurs when animals are exposed to freezing temperatures and cold wind. It typically affects the feet, tail and ears, and strikes when the body diverts blood to the vital internal organs, causing ice crystals to form and tissue to die. Affected skin will first appear pale or grey and will feel cold to the touch.

Hypothermia (low body temperature) can take hold rapidly and can be fatal if not treated urgently. As with humans, shivering is the first sign that a pet is cold, but this can stop if the body temperature drops too low. Pets can then become confused and subdued with pale or blue gums, and their breathing may become slow, shallow or irregular.

According to one vet quoted in the article, if you suspect your pet is suffering from hypothermia, make sure they are dry, then gradually raise their body temperature by placing them next to a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel, or by using a hair dryer on a low heat. Hypothermia can be fatal so don’t ignore potential signs and call your vet for further advice immediately.

Here are some tips to help you to avoid putting your dog’s health in danger:

  • Dogs with fine hair and less natural protection (such as greyhounds) are more susceptible to the cold and should wear a suitable dog coat.
  • Don’t leave cats and dogs outside without access to shelter and warmth.
  • Never leave animals in cars or unheated conservatories and caravans, as the temperature can drop rapidly causing hypothermia.
  • Ensure your pet does not lie on frozen ground for a prolonged period.
  • Dogs that are very old or young, or those that are unwell, are less able to regulate their body temperature. They should not be outside in the cold for long periods.

Caring For Sick Pets: When Your Dog Is Diagnosed With Cancer

Posted: 01/18/11 8:00 AM | Filed Under: Blog | No Comments »

As a pet owner, it is your duty to care for your pet when he or she comes down with an illness. Cancer, however, is a little more difficult to deal with.

The amount of care and companionship that your dog needs may increase, and becomes more important if the disease is terminal in nature. Cancer in dogs is one such disease where detection unfortunately happens in the later stages, rendering treatment almost immaterial and useless. In such cases, love, care and comfort are the three things that you can provide for your dying dog.

Even though there are numerous kinds of cancer and each can affect different parts of the dog’s body, the basic fundamentals of care for cancer in dogs remains the same. The basic idea is to make the dog’s life as comfortable as possible.

One dog blog, Caring for Cancer in Dogs, provides some fundamental ways to caring for your sick dog:

Pain Management— The target of pain management should be to try and prevent pain from occurring, rather than treating it with strong painkillers once the pain has started.  In cases of localized pain, a local anesthesia can be used.

Avoid Dehydration— Certain types of cancers produce nausea and vomiting. Your main goal should be to reduce vomiting and the consequent risk of canine dehydration. Your dog may not feel up to eating or drinking much, but try an alternative to tap water: dogdration, the premium peanut butter flavored dog beverage, that hydrates your dog and provides him or her with important nutrients and electrolytes, which may put your pet in a better mood.

Diet— Your dog’s diet is the most important aspect of cancer care. It is a good idea to monitor diet closely if you have chosen chemotherapy as the treatment for your pet, because a good diet improves the efficacy of chemotherapeutic drugs.

Nauseated dogs are liable to refuse to eat. Try some appetite-enhancing remedies and feed him warm food in a stress-free environment. Ask your veterinarian about Omega 3 fatty acids, digestible proteins and supplemental amino acids.
