How Your Dog Can Become Your New Stress-Reliever

Posted: 06/16/10 2:59 AM | Filed Under: Blog | No Comments »

There are many health benefits of dogs and of owning a dog.  Our furry friends improve our communication skills, they keep us fit and in shape, and they even build social skills that help them function around us. Not to mention, they’re cute and can quickly get us smiling!

Your pet and health are related in many other ways as well.

Consider your stress level.  When you’re around your pet, do you notice that you feel less anxious and less worried? That’s because pets can provide excellent social support, stress relief and other health benefits—perhaps more than people!

Here are some health benefits to owning a pet, and some ways they can relieve your stress:

  • Man’s Best Friend Can Put You In A Better Mood— Research supports the mood-enhancing benefits of pets. A recent study found that men with AIDS were less likely to suffer from depression if they owned a pet.
  • Pets Can Control Your Blood Pressure— In a study of a group of New York stockbrokers with high blood pressure, those in the study who got dogs or cats were found to have lower blood pressure and heart rates than those who didn’t get pets.
  • Pets Have Been Shown To Reduce Stress More Than Your Friends That Are Good Listeners— Recent research shows that spending time with your pet can reduce stress even more than talking it out with a good friend. According to one study, when conducting a task that’s stressful, people actually experienced less stress when their pets were with them than when a supportive friend or even their spouse was present.

Dogs also have perks like their ability to prevent loneliness, and their encouragement to get us out and exercising, which can both lead to less stressful lives.  Visit this site for more dog health information and information about how your dog can improve your life!

If you want to reward your dog for making your life happier, healthier and less stressful, try out some dogdration, a healthy and tasty snack for after playtime!

Chicken Broth Dog Biscuit Recipe

Ingredients:

•1 cup whole wheat flour

•1/3 cup cornmeal

•1 Tbsp canola oil

•1/4 cup chicken broth, low sodium

•1 eggs

•1/8 cup milk, low or fat free

•1 egg, beaten for egg wash

Additional flour for rolling

Instructions:

1.Preheat oven to 350° F

2.Whisk together wheat flour and cornmeal.

3.Add oil, broth, eggs and milk.

4.Mix until thoroughly combined.

5.Roll out dough on a floured surface to 1/4″ thickness.

6.Cut into shapes with cookie cutters. I used a chicken shape for fun because of the chicken broth.

7.Gather remaining dough and roll flat. Cut as many dog biscuits as you can. I usually roll the last little bit of dough into a ball and then flatten for a traditional cookie shape.

8.Brush the egg wash onto each cookie.

9.Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden brown.

10.Cool completely on a wire rack.

Pet Sugar Blog

Posted: 05/25/10 4:13 AM | Filed Under: Blog | No Comments »

The Pet Sugar Blog is one of several blogs on the ’sugar’ website, a website for mostly women, with topics like fashion, beauty, health and home decor.

This blog features fun and silly posts, like cute photos of Pet of the Day, and funny videos of puppies doing silly things.  There are also posts that answer some important dog health questions, with tips, advice and valuable dog health information.  Here are six dog training tips from one of the blog’s posts:

  1. Try using tiny treats, as it is important that the treats are tiny enough to make them quick to eat as well as of a texture that limits the amount of chewing or crumbling.
  2. Choose your commands carefully. They should be easy for your dog to distinguish from the other words you say.
  3. Switch up the lesson settings
  4. Bring your pup in public
  5. Teach the hand touch. Even if you don’t have a treat in your hand, you want your pet’s focus to be on you, and not on anything or anyone else when you’re training him.
  6. Don’t just say no

This blog is also extremely interactive and reader-friendly, as it takes ideas, comments and information from its readers.

For example, the dog blog gives this helpful hint, from one of its readers:

If your pooch struggles to learn “Drop it!” and won’t let go of a toy, bone, or naughty object he’s grabbed in his mouth, gently blow into his ear. For some reason, the wind not only makes the pet jerk his head away, but also makes him open his mouth to let it go, too. Neat trick.

5 Things You Can Do To Improve The Health Of Your Dog

Posted: 05/24/10 8:00 AM | Filed Under: Blog | No Comments »

There are simple things you can do to improve your dog’s health, and even lengthen his life.  Good health for dogs is extremely important, because you want to ensure your pet’s longevity as best you can.

What follows is some dog health information which can improve the health of your dog, and, may even answer some of your dog health questions!

  1. Herbs can be used for common dog ailments. Herbs like aloe vera, calendula flowers, ginger, milk thistle and chamomile can help considerably with issues like constipation, infections, wounds and upset stomachs.
  2. The ideal diet for your dog is raw food. Raw meat, with some raw vegetables and other foods like fruit, rice and egg is an very healthy meal for dogs, and one that they’re not getting with commercial dog food.  Almost none of those ingredients above are found in commercial dog foods, which are usually processed food with tons of preservatives.
  3. Schedule playtime with your dog. Find a spot where your dog can run freely and in the open, and maybe interact with other dogs. This is a great way to ensure that your dog is active and healthy, as games with your dog get him physically moving and thinking, which is good for the brain.
  4. Provide your dog with clean, fresh water. Some tap water is loaded with toxins and can harm your dog’s health, so be sure that you’re feeding your dog water that is pure and healthy, or maybe with some added flavor, like dogdration.
  5. Provide your dog with mental stimulation. If your dog is in ‘mental balance’ then he will be a happier pup. Dog trainer Mogen Eliasen advocates training which does take into account your dog’s intelligence, and this method really works.

Top 5 Dog Health Questions

Your dog health questions are answered.  Read this blog and follow these dog health tips and dog health information to insure that your dog remains happy and healthy.

How do I prevent my dog from having fleas or ticks? External parasites, which are an extremely common ailment to many dogs, can lead to many health problems.  Fleas can be a source of tapeworms to your dog.  They can also cause hair loss, infections of the skin, allergic reactions, and even anemia. Ticks are a big cause for concern for your dog because they can carry Lyme disease.  To prevent fleas and ticks, check your dog for these and other parasites regularly. If necessary, take your dog to the vet and have these pests removed by a professional. If you feel comfortable doing this yourself, go to your local pet store or vet for an effective treatment you can administer.

How do I prevent my dog from being overweight? The primary causes of obesity are overeating and lack of exercise. When the number of calories your dog eats exceeds the energy burned, the excess is stored as fat. As little as an extra one percent caloric intake can result in a 25 percent increase over ideal body weight by middle age.  To prevent your dog from becoming, or remaining, overweight, take these precautions:

  • Lower your dog’s daily calorie intake by changing his food brand, or the amount that you feed your dog
  • Increase your dog’s fiber and water intake, to fill and satisfy your dog
  • Increase your dog’s exercise and activity

How do I prolong and prevent my dog from suffering from arthritis? Arthritis is very common among overweight and old dogs. To prevent arthritis in your dog, maintain his weight.  Make sure he gets plenty of exercise, and do not excessively feed him.  If you know that your dog already has arthritis, or soon will, try feeding him glucosamine supplements, to make the pain from arthritis more bearable.

What is Heartworm? Heartworm is a parasitic disease that is contracted through mosquitoes. It is a parasite that multiplies and grows in rapidly dividing cells. For this reason it tends to affect puppies, more than adult dogs. It ultimately will cause infections in the dogs’ heart chambers and arteries in their lungs. Symptoms start as a mild cough with fatigue, and if untreated, could worsen to congestive heart failure. All puppies should be vaccinated against this parasite to prevent infection.

What causes dog diarrhea and how can I prevent it? Diarrhea occurs when food travels through the digestive system too quickly, resulting in insufficient moisture being absorbed. This usually happens when the dog’s intestines become irritated and inflamed.  Dog diarrhea is usually caused by the foods that they eat.  If your dog gets in to something he wasn’t supposed to, or if you give him too many fatty foods, he will likely have diarrhea.  To prevent loose stools, cut out foods and treats high in fat and sodium, and be sure to keep all human food out of your dog’s reach.
