Dog Behavior Myths Dispelled

According to some, breeds like American pit bulls, boxers, rottweilers, and even German Shepherds are natural-born killers.

This idea, however, is a myth, according to vetinfo.com. Dog behavior is a hot topic, especially with the preconceived notion that certain breeds are naturally aggressive. This, however, is false. These canines may look fierce, but that does not necessarily mean they are aggressive.

Myth One: Some Dog Breeds Are Inherently Aggressive

It has been said that some breeds, such as the rottweiler or the American pit bull, are inherently aggressive and consequently dangerous. This information is false. No dog breed is inherently aggressive. Any dog, of any breed, can display aggressive behavior if mistreated, abused or frightened.  Dogs may also become aggressive when they are abused by those who desire aggressive guard or fighting dogs. Unfortunately, American pit bulls and rottweilers tend to be the victims of this practice.

Dogs may also become aggressive out of fear.

Myth Two: An Agressive Dog Cannot Be Re-Trained

In fact, aggressive dogs can be re-trained.  Socialization and obedience training can help your dog learn to be open with other dogs and other people. Many aggressive dogs are put into shelters, usually due to the abuse or neglect the received from previous owners, but when (and if) they are adopted, they become accustomed to their new families and new pets. Psychotropic medication may also help your aggressive dog begin the retraining process.

Myth Three: Aggressive Dogs Are Too Dangerous To Handle

While some dogs may exhibit very aggressive behavior, you should not give up on them.  Professional dog training is available, and may be required if your situation calls for it. Especially if the dog has been harshly mistreated, you may want to consider or at least consult a professional dog trainer. However, most dogs that exhibit some aggressive behavior, like barking or attack posing, can be retrained by the owner who has sought professional advice.

If you are having issues training your dog, consider using treats—but treats they actually like. Buy some dogdration, to freeze in an ice tray and use the dog beverage ice cubes as treats to train your pet!

We thought it would be appropriate to share a video we recently found on YouTube of two German Shepherds enjoying dogdration.

We wanted to share that you can not only pour dogdration into a bowl for your pups, but you can also freeze it into ice cubes.  Dogs love the ice cubes, and they end up being a healthy natural treat for your dog.

If you have a YouTube video of your dog drinking dogdration, we’d love to see it.  Please send a link to your dog drinking dogdration to info@dogdration.com – and we will feature it on our blog!
